Dean of FEBI promotes environmental issues at the 2024 AICIS event

IAIN Pontianak academics once again enlivened the international conference event in an event called the 23rd Annual International Conference on Islamic Studies (AICIS) held at the State Islamic University (UIN) Walisongo Semarang (Jan 31-Feb 4, 2020).

Dean of FEBI IAIN Pontianak Dr. Samsul Hidayat, MA was one of the lecturers whose article was selected to be presented at the prestigious event. By carrying out the research theme; “Maintaining Environmental Balance; The Moderate Practice
of Islam and Khonghucu in Valuing Food”, Samsul collaborated with Prof. Wen Haiming, a researcher from Renmin University of China, and Yesica Cukarestu from the Indonesian College of Khonghucu.

This collaborative research of lecturers from within and outside the country seeks to explore the moderation practices of Islam and Khonghucu in valuing food as an effort to maintain environmental balance. More specifically, this study questions how the values of Islamic and Confucian moderation are reflected and integrated in daily consumption practices so as to maintain environmental balance in a sustainable manner.

The results show that both communities have environmental care practices that are reflected in efforts to reduce food waste and control consumption. The concept of moderation and balance in Islam and Khonghucu is the main foundation of this practice, with reference to religious teachings, cultural norms and ethical values. The findings suggest that the practice of environmental stewardship can be a point of convergence between religion and culture in an effort to maintain the sustainability of natural resources.

The policy and conceptual implications of these findings can be used as a basis for promoting awareness of environmental stewardship among Muslim and Confucian communities and developing inclusive sustainability strategies. Further studies can expand the scope and go deeper in understanding sustainable behavior in diverse cultural contexts.

This year’s AICIS 2024 was also strengthened by the religious leaders summit, which presented various thoughts and discussed solutions to a series of contemporary problems from a religious perspective.
